This painting was created for the HSC Children’s Cancer Ward Remodelling Competition, after a collector encouraged me to enter. I stepped outside my usual style to capture a sweet deer that unexpectedly appeared among the canola as I photographed the fence and surrounding field. Its gentle presence brought a sense of warmth, wonder and hope to the scene—qualities I hoped would be especially meaningful in a children’s cancer ward.

This June, I came across this delightful pattern of S’s in a field created by a new crop of soy beans contrasting with the dark earth below.

My interpretation of our Winnipeg Art Gallery is intentional in its view. The studio entrance is shown and if you look carefully you can see the golden boy. I’ve honoured scale and line but had fun with the colours.
